Too High in Inorganic Arsenic (Class I Carcinogen)

Inorganic arsenic is a known carcinogen. Rice is currently considered a significant source of environmental arsenic for humans, ranging from 17% (2009-10 EPA study) to the main cause of over half of the total environmental exposure, which is attributed to cereals according to a
“more complete” study by the European Food Safety Organization
(Consumer Reports, 2012). Babies are among the most vulnerable to this carcinogen.

Among the four baby rice cereals CR tested for arsenic in late 2012, Earth’s Best Organic Whole Grain Rice cereal for infants had the highest average levels of inorganic arsenic–ALMOST DOUBLE (193%) the average
inorganic arsenic in the other three baby brands (Beech-Nut Homestyle Cereal, Gerber Rice, Gerber SmartNourish).

Also, 67% of the total arsenic found in Earth’s Best Organic Whole Grain Rice was inorganic arsenic, the kind that causes cancer, higher than the average of 55% for the more than 200 rice products CR tested.

If you grouped the 4 baby cereals together with the 32 brands of uncooked rice that CR tested, Earth’s Best infant rice cereal takes the NUMBER FOUR spot in highest concentrations of inorganic arsenic in parts
per billion.* (#1: Della Basmati Brown, 179.66 ppb; #2 365 Everyday Value Long Grain Brown (Whole Foods), 176.67 ppb; #3 Carolina Whole Grain Brown, 164.33 ppb; #4 Earth’s Best Organic Whole Grain Rice Cereal, 152; #5 Jazzmen Louisiana Aromatic Brown, 149ppb).

If you were to prepare your uncooked rice according to the CR and FDA recommended methods which could remove up to 30% of the arsenic
in uncooked rice, Earth’s Best Organic Whole Grain Rice Cereal for infants
jumps into the NUMBER ONE spot as having the HIGHEST average inorganic arsenic contamination in parts per billion. (#1 Earth’s Best, 152ppb; #2: Della Basmati Brown, 126.8ppb;#3 365 Everyday Value Long Grain Brown (Whole Foods), 123.7ppb; #4 Carolina Whole Grain Brown, 115ppb; #5 Jazzmen Louisiana Aromatic Brown, 104.3ppb)

*A summary table in the CR study shows there are 1.5-2.7 micrograms of inorganic arsenic PER SERVING of Earth’s Best brown rice infant
cereal, but you have to note that servings are only 15g. If you wanted to
compare the inorganic arsenic concentration in uncooked rice and baby rice, gram for gram, rather than PER SERVING, you would have to multiply the inorganic arsenic found in 15g of infant cereal by 3 to compare with the 45g servings of uncooked rice.

It turns out the concentrations of inorganic arsenic in Earth’s Best brown rice cereal are much higher than levels found in other baby rice cereals, and they are higher in EB cereal than in most of the uncooked rice brands the CR tested; and if you used the CR and FDA uncooked rice prep
guidelines, then the level of inorganic arsenic in EB brown rice cereal for
infants is higher than in ALL of the uncooked brands of rice the CR tested.

If you are choosing rice for allergen or other reasons, you are much better off feeding your baby another brand of infant rice, or rice that you cooked yourself that was grown in CA, India, or Thailand, especially white rice and aromatic rices (Jasmine or Basmati). These forms of rice all had the lowest levels of arsenic. If you use the FDA and CR prep guidelines to remove
a further 30% of the arsenic in uncooked rice, you can end up feeding your baby up to 75% LESS inorganic arsenic than is found in this Earth’s Best product!

Run, do not walk away from this product! First foods should be fun, not scary! Exercise your other options. The detailed CR data shows that virtually anything is better than this cereal, especially for infants who are among the most vulnerable to the carcinogen found in this product.
